Walking into Beauty Bar makes you wish you’d donned your black leggings (guys), pretentiously coiffed hair, and the gaze that screams, “I just threw up in the bathroom.” Well, that might be a tad extreme, but it appears Gil Mantera’s Party Dream and Camel Cigarettes bring out the hipster’s hipster. While the hipster ‘tude and body odor are usually a deal breaker for any venue for Coffee and Doughnut, the hype surrounding the Party was enough for us to make headway to the front of the stage at Beauty Bar on Saturday, December 15.

Shortlist Prize Nominees Announced

Today came the announcement of this years “long list” for the Shortlist Prize. 54 albums were chosen from this years vast catalog of new music. The Shortlist Prize is awarded to the best album of the year that has not yet received gold certification (500,000 units sold) from the Recording Industry Association of America. The initial list is put together by many notable people in the music industry with this years listmakers including band members and radio personalities. Past years listmakers have included Willie Nelson, Elton John, Trent Reznor, Beck, Dave Matthews, Tom Waits, Iggy Pop, Paul Oakenfold, Spike Jonze, Wayne Coyne and Mos Def. This years list features many of the bigger names in the indie music scene including Wilco, Arcade Fire and Kings Of Leon. It also features some harder acts like Bad Religion and Serj Tankian from System Of A Down. Previous winners include Cat Power, Sufjan Stevens, TV on the Radio and Damien Rice.

Tuesday Night with the Check O Crew

Big plans were in store on Tuesday, December 18th for us here at Breakfast on Tour. Scion hosted its monthly no-cover at Warehouse Live featuring Slick Rick, Percee P, and Connie Price and the Keystones, and we were determined to enjoy some old school hip-hop. These normally have a really good vibe, but the size of the crowd is always hit-or-miss. Being a free show there is always the slight chance that it will reach capacity, only ever happening once before with Gnarls Barkley. It was evident though on Tuesday night that all of Houston’s hip-hop heads decided to come out. When we arrived at about 10:30 it was full. They had already established the one-out/one-in rule, and staying until at least 100 people left did not sound like a good idea to us. Instead of standing around all night we decided to head over to G.R.A.B. bar to catch up with our friends from Houston based hip-hop group Check Other.
