Radiohead Ring In 2008

4:56 am by

Surely you’ve heard all the talk these past few months about Radiohead’s you-pick-the-price internet release of In Rainbows. The tracks were relatively low-resolution, but still bloody amazing–there’s a reason this album ended up on so many year-end best-of lists (Pitchfork, Sterogum, Rolling Stone, Gorilla vs Bear, our own BOThead Eggs…and on and on). If you couldn’t take the pressure of choosing how much to pay, or if you’ve just been holding out for the higher-resolution CD release, tomorrow is not just the first day of 2008. It’s a rainbow-hued D-Day, filled with ‘Weird Fishes’ and ‘Bodysnatchers’. The album is listed on Amazon for $10.99; I’ll be heading to my friendly neighborhood music store, Soundwaves, to pick it up.

More Radiohead news after the jump

But this begs a question: if the internet release of In Rainbows was a popular pick for 2007’s various best albums list, will the CD release be eligible for inclusion on 2008 best-of lists? I mean, the official release date is January 1, 2008. Thoughts, anyone?

If you’re planning on staying in tonight in an effort to avoid the drunks and astronomical prices (or whatever you might hate about NYE), cruise on over to to join in the celebration of (in Thom’s words) “the release of the physical manifestation of In Rainbows“. The band will be broadcasting a pre-recording of some songs and ‘other bits’ at midnight, UK time (that’s 6pm Central).

And in case you’ve been wondering why Radiohead didn’t re-sign with EMI, Thom recently posted an explanation on the band’s website. Apparently he doesn’t like dealing with record execs who behave “like confused bulls in a china shop”. Amen.

Hope everyone out there has a safe but fantastic New Year’s Eve!

Carpe ientaculum.
