The Video Omelette: Jan 10, 2008

As you can tell, I am extremely excited about the initial artist announcement for this year’s festival. It should be fun to see who else is added over the next couple of months. This week my Video Omelette features some of the bands that I am most excited for on the 2008 line-up.

Dr. Dog – “California”

This is a pretty fun video of Dr. Dog performing on the streets of St. Louis with the aid of a guitar and parking cones/megaphones. These guys should add a unique touch to Wakarusa.

Galactic featuring Gift Of Gab – “The Corner”

Wakarusa has never featured hip-hop before, so I was pretty excited when I saw that Blackalicious are on the bill. Galactic has made it on the line-up 4 out of five times, so they know how to make the Wakarusians get down. I am laying down a safe bet that this song will be performed at some point (hopefully well past midnight) in Lawrence.

CAKE – “The Distance”

I have never really had the chance to see CAKE. They have never been featured at any of the festivals I have been to, nor have they come to the cities I have lived in. I was really excited to see these guys towards the top of the line-up at this year’s Wakarusa. This show will be one of my top priorities in June.

Jerry Garcia and David Grisman – “Friend Of The Devil”

Like CAKE, I have never been able to catch David Grisman live. I used to be obsessed with The Pizza Tapes by Grisman, Jerry Garcia and Tony Rice. I would always find myself wailing the lyrics, all the way from “Man of Constant Sorrow” to “House of the Rising Sun.” I now finally have a chance to catch David Grisman live! Here is a classic version of the Grateful Dead’s “Friend of the Devil” featuring Garcia and Grisman backed by keyboard legends Bernie Worrell and Paul Shaffer.
