Wakarusa 2010 :: Saturday

Our friends took a trip to the nearest Wal-Mart from Wakarusa on Friday. Gotta love Arkansas! Coming back, they appeared very refreshed. That”s when they told the rest of us sweaty beasts about the nice and refreshing hour they spent wading in the Mulberry River. As the heat continued to beat us down severely, we knew where our Saturday was going to begin.

I woke up that morning to the Ketamine laughs next door, reassuring myself that I wasn”t in the Mulberry already, but in a river of my own sweat. About an hour or so later we packed up the crew, some food and a grill, and headed down the mountain to our shady retreat for the afternoon. After a trip to the waterfall last year, and nearly going into heat stroke on the way back, the seven mile drive seemed like bliss compared to that hike. We were greeted at the river by several other festival goers, although the place had yet to become completely packed out. This was largely due to a lot of people being parked in for the weekend.

We spent the majority of the afternoon at the swimming hole, showering and taking in a scrumptious lunch with some new friends. The shower I took in the river beat the balls off of our solar shower, and I was rejuvenated and ready to take in another night of great music. With Widespread Panic headlining the night, I knew it was going to be a late night. Lots of Gatorade and water would be ingested through the day, hoping to make my night last just a little bit longer. Read on for Saturday”s musical feast after the jump.

Slightly Stoopid @ Wakarusa 2010

Slightly Stoopid @ Wakarusa 2010

Slightly Stoopid filled up the Revival Tent. I don’t think another soul could fit in there, in fact, Hash Browns got a little overwhelmed and left me. I thought I had lost her, but no, she left me. I struggled going around the people when trying to get better angles for my shots, all the while soaking in the love from the fans (as well as some fumes and sweat, ya’ll).

See the rest of the review and photos after the break.

Free Press Summer Fest 2010 | Sunday In Photos

Free Press Summerfest 2010: Sunday, June 6
The 2nd annual Free Press Summerfest has come and gone, leaving a fulfilled feeling throughout our fair city of Houston. As an avid festival attendee, who has traveled the globe in search of different musical experiences, it was a very nice change of pace to have such a great event right in my back yard. Despite some intense heat, and even more intense rain and mud, I still managed to have one of the best weekends I’ve had in some time. The Flaming Lips were the prize performers of the weekend, but the festival also included standout showings from national acts like Lucero, Stars, Ra Ra Riot, Mix Master Mike and Medeski, Martin & Wood as well as local fair from Buxton, listen!listen!, Eastern Sea, B L A C K I E, Grandfather Child and Elaine Greer among many others.

While I was busy running around taking pictures for the Houston Press, I still managed to also take quite a few for myself over the course of the two day festy. Check out my shots from the Sunday, June 6th after the jump!

Voodoo Experience 2010 Initial Lineup

Voodoo Experience 2009: Saturday

The initial line-up for the 2010 Voodoo Experience has been released and has already been improved by a major addition: My Morning Jacket. This festival has never let us down, and 2010 looks to be no different. Headlining the three-day event are the suddenly ubiquitous festival act Muse, legendary Black Sabbath founder Ozzy Osbourne, the aforementioned My Morning Jacket, nostalgia act (at least among my peers) Weezer and the bipolar dance/psychedelic band MGMT. Other acts scheduled to play include Metric, Hot Chip, Tom Morello and Boots Riley’s Street Sweeper Social Club, NOLA’s own Galactic (and Friends!), and Jakob Dylan and Three Legs. It’s a little insane that this will be BoT’s fifth year attending the festival, but it truly is the best time to be in New Orleans and we wouldn’t miss it for anything.

You can check out the full line-up after the jump.
