Outside Lands 2009: Friday

A couple years ago, I headed to San Francisco to check out a pretty new festival called Outside Lands. Being put on by Superfly Productions gave OsL instant credibility, as the other festival they run, Bonnaroo, has become the biggest outdoor music and arts event in America. On top of that, the first year they brought the likes of Radiohead and Tom Petty among tons of others. The year I attended, 2009, featured another huge line-up including Pearl Jam, Dave Matthews Band, Tenacious D, Tom Jones, TV On The Radio, Ween, Modest Mouse, Band Of Horses and The Avett Brothers. Last year, the event was pushed back to a two-day affair, but still featured The Strokes, Further, My Morning Jacket, Kings of Leon and Al Green among several others. Three years gone, and they’ve already featured some of today’s biggest acts. Pretty good reputation for a fourth year festival, I’d say. On top of that, it all goes down in one of, if not the premier outdoor space in America, San Francisco’s Golden Gate Park.

This year is no different in terms of talent. They are doing it right, and bringing a who’s who of today’s top touring acts to the event. Headlining the three nights are Brit-rockers Muse, jam-titans Phish (playing two full sets!) and recent Grammy winners Arcade Fire, who I’m pretty sure signed some sort of deal with the devil to get them to play every festival in the world. Joining the three headliners is quite the impressive undercard featuring the likes of garage rock duo The Black Keys, critter costumed progressive dance dj Deadmau5, indie-sensations MGMT, mash-up mastermind Girl Talk, legendary CCR-frontman John Fogerty, Jimmy Fallon’s backing band The Roots and many, many more. I’m looking forward to making it back to Outside Lands, as if I remember correctly, I called it the best non-camping festival I’ve ever been to after my trip there. With a 2-set performance from Phish, and the rest of this killer line-up, I have a feeling this is the year of my return.
