The Giving Tree Band @ George’s Majestic Lounge
This is a late post, but I promise you it’s worth the wait. At the end of April, one of my favorite Bluegrass/Americana band made a stop in Fayetteville, AR at George’s Majestic Lounge. It had been close to two years since I first experienced The Giving Tree Band live. It had been way too long.
They opened for Dirtfoot at George’s the night of April 27th. There was a small crowd, but the set was still so magical. Their charisma on stage was what drew me in on the first place, and an album and a few new band members later, I can tell you they just keep getting better. I got a bunch of photos for your entertainment. There’s also a video of their new single and more info on their upcoming projects, so continue reading after the jump
That Friday night was easy. The Giving Tree Band is the type of band that fits Fayetteville to the T, yet somehow goes unnoticed. I mean, the people at the Fayetteville Farmers’ Market would fall head over heels for these guys (kinda like me when they started playing “Circles” the first time I heard it.)
The band is still headed by brothers Todd Fink (Banjo) and E Fink (Guitar), along with Phil Roach (Violin), Normam (Mandolin), Woody Woods (Slide), Z (Drums), and Charlie Karls (Bass). These guys are just awesome. I could listen to them all night. Their love of music overflows the stage as they dance around, stomp, and switch places around the microphones.
There was a lot of jamming that night. They played several songs from their most recent album The Joke, The Threat, & The Obvious, including my very favorite, “Circles.” You better believe I sang along every single lyric of that song! The beautiful “Early To Bed” from Great Possessions put everyone to dance. Their enchanting version of “Brown Eyed Women” had everyone singing, as well as “I Shall Be Released.”
The guys just finished their new album Vacilador, and the plan is to release it later in the year. But it you’re on their way while they tour around with Joe Purdy in June, snatch a copy of it. They’ll have pre-release copies available (someone get me one, por favor!) As a teaser, I leave you their new video of “Cold Cold Rain.”
Catch them live if you can, you will be happy you did. Here are their coming US tour dates with Joe Purdy:
