Heart & Jason Bonham's Led Zeppelin Experience @ Cynthia Woods Mitchell Pavilion

Last Night, the Heartbreaker Tour hit the stage at Cynthia Woods Mitchell Pavilion featuring 70’s classic rockers Heart along with Jason Bonham, son of famed Led Zeppelin drummer John Bonham, with his Led Zeppelin Experience.

Going into the show I was a bit leery as aging rock acts are always hit or miss, but I love me some Heart so it was really no question on if I’d be in attendance. Thankfully I made it out, because it was pretty damn incredible.

Check out a bunch more words and photos as well as a link to my photos on Houston Press’ Rocks Off blog after the jump

Ann and Nancy Wilson, despite getting up there in years, had no problem filling the shoes of their 25 year old selves. The hits were there from the get-go, as the Wilson sisters opened the set with “Barracuda,” “What About Love” and “Magic Man” backed by a solid group of touring musicians. The crowd was eating up every moment while pounding 12 dollar beer after 12 dollar beer.

My significant other and I had this cute group of friends in their 40’s in front of us that were having more fun than anyone in the entire venue. They were dancing wildly, high-fiving and videoing every single moment of the set, including everything going on around them, the security guards, people walking by, me, the people next to me, the people next to them, the people in front of them, the people beside them… you get the point. They were extremely fun to watch, and made me want to get drunk just so I could experience the show like they were.

They closed their portion of the set with a few more rockers including “Alone,” before finally ringing it in with “Crazy On You.” With the inevitable encore on the way, the crowd shouted loudly as the Wilson sisters returned to stage, taking the catwalk – Nancy with a mandolin and Ann with an acoustic guitar. The familiar chords of Led Zeppelin’s “The Battle of Evermore” rang out with Ann and Nancy both taking over the vocal duties. Soon after, Jason Bonham and his band joined the sisters for a five song mini Zeppelin set that included “Immigrant Song,” “The Rain Song,” “Misty Mountain Hop,” “Kashmir” and a set-closing version of “Stairway To Heaven” that might’ve been one of the best cover versions of the song I’ve heard.

Bonham served the crowd a fitting tribute to his father earlier in the night with his Led Zeppelin Experience. Yeah, they might be a cover band fronted by a guy that I could only describe as a Daughtry look-a-like, pocket chain and all, but they sounded good. Bonham, who’s made quite the name for himself as a drummer outside of his fathers shadow, definitely picked a solid list of players to join him in his tribute, easily passing for Zeppelin if you just closed your eyes. They were loud and abrasive and made Zeppelin’s catalog sound full and alive – just as it should be.

It was an exceptional night of classic tunes, bookended by two powerful sets of some of the greatest Zeppelin songs ever. Thankfully, the Wilson Sisters have kept up with their craft over the years, and can still command the stage as well as they did.

The weather forecast leading into the show called for rain, but for some reason it stayed clear (to the delight of the fans on the lawn) just long enough for Heart and Jason Bonham to tear through their sets. Mother Nature must love her some classic rock.

You can see a group of my photos from the show in the article Heart at Cynthia Woods Mitchell Pavilion, 8/14/2013 on Houston Press’ Rocks Off blog.
