Festival season is still a few months away, but now is the time of big decisions. Artist line-ups are dropping every single day, and with that we all have to figure out just where and when we’ll be traveling based on how good or bad the roster of bands are. Wakarusa just dropped their full list of bands, and it’s looking pretty nice, but another local festival was announced kind of under the radar. Old Settler’s Music Festival, which takes place south of Austin at the Salt Lick Pavilion, will feature a slew of great Rock, Americana and Bluegrass over the weekend of April 19-22. Headliners include indie folksters Iron & Wine, big-voiced singer songwriter Amos Lee, southern rockers Jason Isbell & The 400 Unit and newgrass champions Railroad Earth.

A bunch of other bands will also be making their way down to the 25th anniversary of the festival. Check out the full line-up after the jump.

UtopiaFest Preview: Digital Antique

Oct 10, 2011 by

Digital Antique are an indie-rock instrumental trio in the same vein as their Austin older brothers Explosions In The Sky, only they twist it up by adding a quartet of classically trained string players for a unique take on experimental and, at some times, dance music. Opening the second day with what promises to be a very relaxing set for the lunchtime crowd, the group should provide some interesting compositions for the start of the musical day that eventually ends about 14 hours later with Art vs. Science who’s previewed just below.

Check out this video from one of their Austin Performances at the now defunct Emo’s Indoor. It’s definitely some intriguing music, and should be the perfect way to get the day moving.

Fun Fun Fun Fest 2011

Aug 1, 2011 by

I’ve been awaiting the announcement of the 2011 Fun Fun Fun Fest for quite some time now, pretty much ever since I left the park that held the fest last year. Moving to a much bigger park across Austin, Auditorium Shores, and adding a third day, the 6th edition of Fun Fun Fun Fest is set to take place the first weekend of November, the 4th-6th. Today came the announcement of who will be entertaining us on the four stages, and boy is it a doozy.

The Orange Stage will feature the likes of Passion Pit, Lykke Li, Blonde Redhead, Clap Your Hands Say Yeah, Okkervil River, Tune-Yards, Ra Ra Riot and a boat-load more of similar indie-rock fare.

The Black Stage will be much louder with bands like Slayer, The Damned, Danzig Legacy, Kid Dynamite, Murder City Devils, Boris and Thee Oh Sees amongst a bunch more.

The Blue Stage, where I’ll be spending most of my time, will feature a hip-hop and dance card with the likes of Public Enemy, Major Lazer, Odd Future, Diplo, Flying Lotus, Four Tet, Rakim and so many more.

Finally, comedy and variety acts are the focus on The Yellow Stage, where Henry Rollins, Brian Posehn, Reggie Watts, Upright Citizens Brigade and Donald Glover are topping the bill.

Houston also has a presence on the Fun Fun Fun Fest 2011 line-up, with local rappers and friends of the site Fat Tony and B L A C K I E both set to play The Blue Stage.

Check out the full line-up after the jump!

Old Settler’s Music Festival: Friday Preview

Wakarusa 2009: Friday

There’s a slight baby-shaped pallor hanging over the Friday festivities at Old Settler’s Music Fest. News of the Avett Brothers cancellation will surely be forgotten after a day of enjoying incredible music, company, and weather though. Well, maybe not forgotten, but at least forgiven. I kid, of course, as I’m happy to be a fan of a band that puts family before paydays. The rest of the existing Friday lineup is enough, including sets from Langhorne Slim, Avett-replacements Grupo Fantasma, and the Emmit-Nershi Band.

Trampled By Turtles

Driftwood, TX. Population 1,585. Home of the world-famous Salt Lick BBQ and the best bluegrass festival this side of Telluride. This sleepy ex-ghosttown in the Hill Country is days away from being transformed into the mecca of both bluegrass and end-of-spring revelry, with 15,000+ fans of the purest form of music on the precipice of great music and good vibes. I’ve heard amazing things about the site, the staff, and the attendees – when added to the fact that it’s the festival’s best-ever lineup, we here at BoT had no choice but to make our inaugural trip to Camp Ben McCulloch for a weekend of camping and bluegrass. Read on for our preview of Thursday, and stay tuned for Friday/Saturday/Sunday previews and a full review of what’s sure to be a peak festival experience.
