Amos Lee & Langhorne Slim @ Bayou Music Center

Amos Lee and Langhorne Slim rode to town on Friday night and treated a near sold-out show featuring solid performances from both singer-songwriters. Starting with a set from the Pennsylvania native, Slim entertained the crowd with just his guitar and sly smile. Between acoustic takes on some of his more love-themed tunes, Slim told of future failure in the lady department while he gained a whole new fan-base than he’s probably used too.

Playing to a seated crowd of mostly older white folk, Amos Lee came out strapped with an acoustic guitar and backed by a cast of top notch musicians rotating through every type of instrument under the sun. Lee jumps through a bevy of genres during his live show. At some points its the finest indie rock, other times country. When you think it was a twist when the band went bluegrass, they’d turn it into an R&B revue. He re-worked his own tunes both acoustically and with the band and added a batch of well-picked covers in the likes of Queen’s “Fat Bottomed Girls”, Frank Ocean’s “Thinking About You”, The Five Stairsteps’ “Ooh Child,” and a double nod to Houston with Beyonce’s “All The Single Ladies” and H-Town’s “Knockin’ Da Boots.”

Both performers gave their all to their Friday night together, and were excited to be playing to so many more people than they’re used to in the Bayou City. They both have such a unique voice and style of playing that their tour together was the perfect fit. Langhorne Slim’s decision to play solo was a great idea, as it connected him with the specific audience that Amos Lee draws. While it was an older crowd, Lee livened it up just enough to bring a youthfulness to the room with his headlining set. It was a good concert which thankfully got out early enough for me to catch most of The Black Angels set at Fitzgerald’s later in the evening. Double show nights are the best.
