MUTEMATH @ House Of Blues

Mute Math @ House Of Blues

Last weekend was a great one for music, starting Thursday night at House Of Blues when Alt-Rockers MUTEMATH took the stage. I’d seen MUTEMATH once before when they performed at Voodoo a few years back, but among all of the other great acts playing that weekend, they weren’t one that stood out above the rest. Going into this show, especially with such an early start time, my hopes were not too high. Those low hopes were immediately diminished as soon as they walked in the front door of the venue with instruments in hand, headed through the crowd while playing before ultimately taking the stage from the very middle. As soon as they jumped into their first song, I was sold. I had the opportunity to photograph the band for the first three songs, and while the energy was super high as it usually is at the beginning, it didn’t let up one bit after I left the pit. Actually, for over two straight hours, the band never let up. I’m not sure how a band could go for so long with such high energy, but they managed to do it that night – and while this was the first night of their tour, I have a feeling this is how it is at every single show. They were on the stage, off the stage, in the crowd, on top of the crowd, on top of a drum in the crowd, on top of a glittery, light-up air mattress on the crowd, and just about everywhere else besides the balcony and the bathrooms. The music was great too – mixing elements of 90′s alternative, 00′s jambands, and 10′s indie-dance rock, MUTEMATH had people sweating the whole performance. I had a great time at this show, and I can rest assured knowing that a band this good is making a huge name for themselves because of their ability to put on a great show, both musically and theatrically.

I took a bunch of pictures and a few different videos which you can find after the jump.

Wu-Tang Clan @ House Of Blues

Wu-Tang Clan @ House Of Blues

I’d been waiting quite a long time to finally get my chance to see Wu-Tang Clan for the first time way back in 2006 when they were one of the bigger acts performing at Voodoo Festival, but upon arrival to the festival, they’d backed out only to be replaced by New Orleans rapper Juvenile. They were one of the main reasons I attended my first Voodoo, and although I had a great time, them backing out always kinda pissed me off. Fast forward 5 and a half years, and Wu-Tang Clan were finally about to be on a stage in front of me at Downtown Houston’s House Of Blues, and from what I could tell, they were not backing out this time.

Read all about the show and check out a ton of pictures after the jump.

Old 97′s / Those Darlins @ House of Blues

Old 97's, Those Darlin's & Buxton @ House Of Blues

Welp, I had myself a nice little Saturday. I woke up at 4.30 A.M. in a Los Angeles hotel still buzzed from seeing my favorite musician (Trey Anastasio) at the Music Box, somehow made my flight (winning!), and arrived in Houston just in time to clean up before heading to see my favorite country musician (Hayes Carll) play an instore at Cactus. A couple of hours and a few rounds later, I headed to the House of Blues to see my favorite local band (Buxton) open for my favorite alt-country band (Old 97’s) with most of my favorite people at a venue with my favorite sound in Houston. Twas a weekend of favorites, and every single one was even better than I’d hoped… a goddamn Bacon-y miracle if I ever saw one. Eggs already covered the Buxton portion of the evening, so read on for a recap of the rest of the night at HoB – including some beautiful shots he took of Those Darlins and the Old 97s.

Buxton’s Coming Of Age Party @ House Of Blues

Old 97's, Those Darlin's & Buxton @ House Of Blues

Buxton. A band that we’ve religiously followed since their early days; back when all the members still lived in their hometown of La Porte, TX; back when they could barely find their sound on an outdoor stage; back when there were only four of them. Over the past three years, while slowly becoming good friends with the young group of guys, we have seen them transform into something completely different than what was first witnessed back in 2008. Now, here’s a new, revised Buxton – six members strong and moving up in this world with a vigor. With an already established steady fanbase throughout East Texas, and an arsenal of top-notch songs in their cannon, they are ready for the big time. They’ve just recently signed to regional indie major New West Records, and are set to release their latest album sometime this summer. In the next week, they’ll be setting off to Austin to blow some some fine folks minds with their first official SXSW showcase and a slew of spots at certain major day parties, so it was only proper that they have one last major send-off gig to warm them up – opening for newly established label mates and Dallas natives, The Old 97′s.
