Frankie 45

Yesterday was a sad day in Dallas music. Frankie Campagna, lead singer of greaser punk band Spector 45, passed away. Frankie, or Frankie 45 as his friends affectionately called him, has been playing music in venues across Dallas for nearly a decade, and his energetic, wild shows had been getting more and more attention. They were named the best Dallas punk band in 2009 and 2010, and their song “Try, Try, Try” was named one of the best local songs of 2010 by the Dallas Observer. I had the privilege of seeing Spector 45 perform at the Dallas Observer Music Awards Showcase, and to call him a friend.

Phish Is Coming To Texas

2:26 am by

preparing

In one week from today, mine, Bacon and Toast’s favorite band in the land will be descending on the state of Texas for the first time in over 11 years. Phish will embark on the Austin City Limits Music Festival on Friday in front of a host of both old crusty phans, and (hopefully) a bountiful amount of new listeners as well. Unfortunately, ACL is Phish’s only Texas appearance (as of now), so us Texans are going to have to make the most of it – show Phish that they need to come back soon. I’m not sure what kind of set they’ll bring to the table, hopefully one for the history books. Even if they bring a standard set of their most popular material, it will be quality. Phish in Texas. Yes.

Recently, Hash Browns put up a bunch of pictures from our trip to Atlanta to catch Phish over the 3rd and 4th of July. It was one of the best times of my life, so to relive the event while browsing through these photos has been amazing. Check ’em out after the jump…

BOT had the opportunity to chat it up with Joel Cummins, founding member and keyboard-master of Umphrey’s McGee. We talked about new Umphrey’s material, side projects and interests, and even baseball came out in the conversation.

Umphrey’s McGee is playing a show in Fayetteville, AR at George’s Majestic Lounge on Sunday, Sept 26. Do you have your ticket yet? Don’t miss out!

Do You Have a Question for Joel Cummins of Umphrey’s McGee?

Tomorrow a BoThead is interviewing the deliciously talented keyboard / vocalist of Umphrey’s McGee. Joel Cummins will be answering a few questions and we thought it would be fun to pose him a few queries from fans here on BoT. So comment below with any questions, and we’ll pick a few outlandishly great ones to ask.

There aren’t any shows left in Texas, but you can run up to OKC this Saturday to see them, or Fayetteville, AR on Sunday to party with Cafe Con Leche at George’s Majestic Lounge. Should be an awesome show since it’s a smaller venue – and in the middle of the downtown party strip, Dickson Street.

Deadline is midnight tonight!

Free Press Summer Fest 2011 Blind Pre-Sale

10:48 pm by

To go to a music festival is one thing, but to attend one in your own backyard is like nothing else. The 2010 edition of Houston’s Free Press Summer Fest was unlike any other music festival I’ve attended, mainly because right afterward I was able to take a dive into my own swimming pool and clean the sweat off my body from the dance parties known as The Flaming Lips and Girl Talk. Because of the amazing weekend, I will never miss another one – truly, no matter what happens, I’ll be there. To ensure that that’s the case for you all as well, Pegstar and FPH have announced a blind pre-sale that is out of this world. If you want to attend next year’s festival, no matter what the line-up is, it will only cost you a measly $15. If you want to improve your status at the festy, Fancy Pants passes are only $32.50. That’s incredibly cheap, regardless of what bands will be playing next year. If you’re worried about the quality of music scheduled this ensuing year, just take a gander at last year’s line-up. I’d recommend the Fancy Pants while supplies last, because the AC was very nice mid-afternoon.

To purchase your blind pre-sale tickets check out this site, and while your doing that, see how many times you can spot me in the video above (note: it’s more than five, less than twenty).

Ghoulsfest 2010

10:59 pm by

A few weeks ago, a brand new festival was announced for our fair city of Houston. Taking place on October 30th in Houston’s Tom Bass Park, the first ever Ghoulsfest is sure to be a good time. Promising “the most diverse in a one day event,” the festival is set to feature headlining sets from legendary hardcore band Bad Brains, indie-rockers We Are Scientists and pop-soul singer Macy Gray. Also featured during this all day, outdoor event are DJ sets from both Hot Chip, Fischerspooner and Peanut Butter Wolf, as well as a host of Texas’ best including Daniel Johnston, …And You Will Know Us By The Trail Of Dead and Girl In A Coma. As always, a strong contingent of Houston artist are being represented in form of Fat Tony, Roky Moon & Bolt, Tax The Wolf and several others.

There also seems to be more additions on the way, with one major rumor about an additional headliner – that being Big Boi of Outkast fame. It sure seems to be true, and has been reported by reputable news sources, but really who knows?! Hopefully for Houston’s sake, it is.

Check out the full line-up for the inaugural Ghoulsfest after the jump.

Voodoo Experience 2010 Initial Lineup

8:50 pm by

Voodoo Experience 2009: Saturday

The initial line-up for the 2010 Voodoo Experience has been released and has already been improved by a major addition: My Morning Jacket. This festival has never let us down, and 2010 looks to be no different. Headlining the three-day event are the suddenly ubiquitous festival act Muse, legendary Black Sabbath founder Ozzy Osbourne, the aforementioned My Morning Jacket, nostalgia act (at least among my peers) Weezer and the bipolar dance/psychedelic band MGMT. Other acts scheduled to play include Metric, Hot Chip, Tom Morello and Boots Riley’s Street Sweeper Social Club, NOLA’s own Galactic (and Friends!), and Jakob Dylan and Three Legs. It’s a little insane that this will be BoT’s fifth year attending the festival, but it truly is the best time to be in New Orleans and we wouldn’t miss it for anything.

You can check out the full line-up after the jump.
