Free Press Summer Fest 2010 Schedule, Additions

9:59 am by

I’m posting this a bit late in the game, as it was announced early Saturday morning, but I’ve been carousing through the streets of Austin all weekend so I couldn’t get to it. For a week or more leading up to the announcement, Free Press Houston and Pegstar had been teasing us with an additional headliner for the 2010 Free Press Summer Fest that was yet to be announced. Everyone I talked to about it leading up to the announcement were guessing many different bands ranging from Pavement to LCD Soundsystem, Arcade Fire to GWAR. High hopes we all had, high hopes. While we were given the schedule as well, which is an amazing thing for planners like myself, our hopes for a huge national touring indie-rock group to give the festival a nice little bump in status were somewhat diminished as instead we were given Houston’s hip-hop mascot – Bun B. I think it goes unsaid that if there is a hip-hop act on the caliber of the already scheduled Slim Thug, Bun B will be in attendance, either meandering through the crowd with a drink in hand, or up on stage spitting some verses with whomever it may be. I’ve never seen a Bun B or UGK show, but I’ve seen Bun B perform at least fifteen times, so when Free Press gave us the news of his addition to Slim Thug’s set rather than the heavy hitter I’d been hoping for, my reaction was melancholy at best. I guess now, after June, I can say I’ve seen an advertised Bun B show.

Don’t worry, I’m still extremely excited for the 2010 edition of Free Press Summer Fest, and now that I have a schedule to peruse, I can’t get it off of my mind! Check out the full listing of events after the jump.

We are excited to be giving away two pairs of tickets to see Dr. Dog and Deer Tick at Houston’s Warehouse Live on Sunday, May 2nd. 10:13 am by

This coming Saturday, Warehouse Live will lay host to the Houston edition of Ford Fiesta Movement’s Battle Of The Bands. Team Houston, which consists of local photographers Mark C. Austin and Amber Roussel, are putting on the event that will hopefully send one lucky band to the Bonnaroo Music & Arts Festival. Starting at 6 pm, the free event will host the likes of Black Queen Speaks, Peekaboo Theory, Robert Ellis & the Boys, The Tontons, Tyagaraja, VerseCity and Wayside Drive. While the event is free, you must RSVP which will get you an electronic ticket that must be printed out and brought with you day of show. Team Houston is encouraging as many people to RSVP to the event, as it will help out the fan vote that will allow them to win the second mission and grand prize which includes the winner of the Battle Of The Bands performing at Bonnaroo as well as two new Ford Fiesta’s, one of which will be donated to Noah’s Kitchen, a non-profit group that provides nourishment and nutritional education to the hungry and homeless. Show Preview | Texas Crawfish and Music Festival

Crawfish

I’d be a bad Spring resident if I didn’t do my part to spread the word about the only decent music event that’s within 5 minutes of casa del Bacon. The Texas Crawfish and Music Festival, now in it’s 24th year, is being held over the upcoming three weekends on the fairgrounds of historic Old Town Spring. In addition to enjoying over 70 bands on 3 stages, you can also grub-down on 70 TONS of delicious crawfish and other cajun food, ride some carnival rides, and pick up Grandma’s X-mas gift from a variety of unique Old Town Spring vendors. Tickets are only 7$ per day when purchased in advance and 10$ a day at the door. This upcoming Saturday stands out as the best day to attend – with Hayes Carll, Ray Wylie Hubbard, Robert Ellis and the Boys, and Sideshow Tramps. Show Preview: Steel Train @ The Waiting Room, March 23rd

2:43 am by

Steel Train will be taking the stage on March 23rd at the handsomely remodeled Waiting Room in Omaha, NE. The show is only $10 and the beer is also reasonably priced, so for a great night of music on a budget, Steel Train would defiantly be worth taking in. For those of you who aren’t familiar with the band, they are put into the indie rock genre. I see where they get that classification, but personally notice more of the 60’s psychedelic and folk influence in their music, which is never a bad thing. And did I mention that they are praised for their live shows and jam sessions? All of these factors are sure to sprawl out on stage next Tuesday in a collision of decades sure to please the mind, body and soul. Opening for the New Jersey quintet will be It’s True and Holly Miranda. Unfortunately, I will just be returning from SXSW and will be unable to make it, but hopefully some of you folks can!

Austin bound,
The Toastman
