Phish Reunite for a Wedding

Rothbury Sunday
Mike Gordon with Trey Anastasio & Jon Fishman at Rothbury

Finally...the news that I, along with many others, have been awaiting for quite some time. Trey Anastasio, Page McConnell, Jon Fishman and Mike Gordon took the stage to play together live for the first time since Phish's "break-up", over four years ago. Coming together to celebrate the wedding of their road manager, the members of Vermont-bred improvisational rock group played through three of their classics. Yes!

Phish reunited this evening at the wedding of longtime road manager Brad Sands. The four musicians took the stage during the private New York ceremony for a three-song performance that included Phish chestnuts “Suzy Greenberg,” “Julius” and “Waste.” Police drummer Stewart Copeland also sat in with Sands’ wedding band on the Police’s “Can’t Stand Losing You” and The Meters’ “Fire on the Bayou.” Sands served as the Police’s road manager throughout the group’s high-profile reunion tour. Phish last performed together in Coventry, VT in August, 2004.

Okay, when I said the video was amazing, I really meant that it was the worst video ever. Now and again during the muddled mess you just watched you can make out Anastasio's guitar work, and once you can even view the silhouette of Gordon's hair. Awesome. But really, let's hope some clips surface soon that are actually recognizable.

Edit: We've located a better video of "Julius" - thanks to YouTube user jeffkravitz for capturing this.

As soon as I saw that Anastasio's stage set-up at ROTHBURY included an extra microphone, I knew he would be bringing Gordon up for a jam. When Gordon first appeared on stage, the energy that was produced by Anastasio's wide smile was almost overwhelming for the many Phish fans in attendance. It was right at that point that Anastasio proved he was past his problems (at least to me...), and was truly ready to come back and play with Gordon, McConnell and Fishman. It was also right then that I realized, even if my tastes have strayed quite far away from where they were four years ago, my favorite band will always be Phish.
