BOT's Year in Review: Eggs' Top 30 Songs of 2008
As we continue with BOT's year in review, I now offer my thirty favorite songs of 2008. Both new and older bands grace this year's list, though it mostly draws from new discoveries rather than past favorites. Take a look at what I've been listening to over the last year after the jump.

30. Octopus Project - "Bees Bein' Strugglin'"
The only Austin band to make the list this year. It was hard to pick my favorite from this band, but in the end "Bees Bein' Strugglin'" made the cut.
29. Man Man - "Ballad of Butter Beans"
One of several Philadelphia bands to make the list, Man Man join my top thirty with the most manic song off their latest album, Rabbit Habbits.
28. The Roots ft. Mos Def - "Rising Down"
The Roots' newest album isn't my favorite effort from them, but it still contains a few standout songs. The title track, which features a choice guest spot from Mos Def, is the brightest of the bunch.
27. Islands - "Creeper"
Arm's Way all together is not as strong as Islands' last effort, Return To The Sea, but still features many good moments. "Creeper" is just what its title suggests, creepy. The guitar riff matched by violin shrills are more than adequate support for Nick Thorburn's blood-soaked vocals. Of all Thorburn's projects to come out this year, Islands still – and probably always will – remain my favorite.
26. The Raconteurs - "Old Enough"
This probably would have showed up higher if they hadn't come out with a bluegrass version that was even better. It's the country feel to this tune that truly does it for me, along with the fact that it is so much different from anything on either one of their albums.
25. Ra Ra Riot - "Ghost Under Rocks"
It's great on the album, but even better live. These kids have a ton of maturing to do, but what they have in the works should lead to pure indie gold in the very near future.
24. Death Cab For Cutie - "I Will Possess Your Heart"
I listened to this song a lot when Narrow Stairs was first released this past summer. I'd never really been a huge fan of Death Cab before this tune, but it definitely opened my eyes to their talent and body of work.
23. Jamie Lidell - "Little Bit of Feel Good"
I have to admit that I have a soft spot for Jamie Lidell, as he is one of the earliest memories of my first Voodoo Experience, where he treated us to our opening morsels of music that weekend. His new album is much more accessible than his prior works, with the funkiest song award going to "Little Bit Of Feel Good."
22. Vampire Weekend - "One (Blake's Got A New Face)"
The blogosphere proclaimed that Vampire Weekend were the best thing going when their self-titled debut hit shelves in January. While the album remains one of my many favorites of the year, it was definitely overshadowed by a few of the year's superior releases. "One (Blake's Got A New Face)" shows me what it would sound like if the Shins covered Phish...and I have to admit that I now want to see the Shins cover Phish.
21. Of Montreal - "For Our Elegant Caste"
This song made the list purely based on the first two lines of the song: "We can do it soft-core if you want, but you should know I take it both ways." Brilliant!
20. Friendly Fires - "On Board"
Some people might flame me for the addition of this tune, as it was used in the advertisement for Wii Fit. If you get past the fact they are one of the many bands riding a wave of success to television commercials, this song all around kicks ass. For those of you not "On Board" yet with what the Friendly Fires are cooking with, you should make it a point to give them a listen.
19. She & Him - "Why Do You let Me Stay Here?"
I have had a huge celeb crush on Zooey Deschanel ever since her appearance as a rampant roadie in the film Almost Famous. When I heard that she'd released an album with folk songwriter/all-around badass M. Ward, it was off to the local record store to pick up a fresh copy. The album is excellent, but – besides the romping "Why Do You Let Me Stay Here" – is quite tame. Let's just hope that the whole music thing continues while Deschanel's movie career continues to blossom.
18. MGMT - "Time To Pretend"
While "Kids" has gradually become my most listened to MGMT track, "Time To Pretend" has remained my favorite by the Brooklyn-bred duo. It's much different from any other song on the album, and was the first song that caught my ear. It's by far the catchiest of the songs on this list.
17. Nas ft. Busta Rhymes - "Fried Chicken"
Definitely the funniest song of my top thirty. It consists of two verses, one by Nas and the other by Busta Rhymes. Nas raps first, spitting some of the cleverest rhymes I've heard in some time about his most favorite thing, fried chicken. Next is Busta, who is equally as quick-witted as Nas with his rhyme, but switches the subject to his most beloved edible, glazed ham hock.
16. The Dodos - "Fools"
We had the chance to experience this group performing in a tiny venue to a crowd of about 20 on Easter Sunday. It was an incredible show that also featured a few other groups, both local and international, with the spotlight shining brightest on the headliner. The duo, joined by an additional player for this show, put out an extremely energetic performance that left everyone staring with jaws dropped, in awe of what they'd witnessed over the past hour-and-a-half. Although the album is almost flawless, "Fools" spent the most time blasting out of my speakers in 2008.
15. Animal Collective - "Water Curses"
I love pretty much everything that these guys have done. Put on a set of headphones and listen to this tune, as well as the following three on the Water Curses EP. If you have never listened to them, that would be a good way to get you hooked quickly.
14. Sigur Rós - "Gobbledigook"
I'm not exactly sure why it took me so long to give Sigur Rós a first listen, but now that I have, I'm kicking myself for not checking them out sooner. After diving into their older material, I took a trip to my friendly local record store to purchase a copy of their latest album, which featured lead track "Gobbledigook." I was immediately hooked by the rich layered Icelandic jam rock that fills the song. It has been on heavy rotation ever since.
13. Spiritualized - "Soul On Fire"
This is my choice for the top sing-a-long of the year. It's by far the catchiest song on Songs in A&E, or ever by Spiritualized for that matter. I'm glad I had the chance to catch it live, smack dab in the middle of the cluster fuck of music on Saturday at ACL. It was a great way to forget about that damn heat.
12. Buxton - "Westward"
If you haven't at least taken a listen to these young chaps from La Porte (basically Houston, for you out-of-towners), you've been missing out. Since first listen, this quartet has stood out from the rest of the burgeoning Bayou City indie scene. "Westward" was the first song I heard by these guys, and I was immediately enthralled by the alt-country goodness emanating from the speakers. The world is going to know about these kids someday.
11. Thao Nguyen with The Get Down Stay Down - "Bag Of Hammers"
I was immediately infatuated as soon as I heard Nguyen's indie pop hit "Bag Of Hammers." Unfortunately, when she came to town her set at the Orange Show was a wash (literally – the skies opened up that night). The whole album is full of head-bobbing gems, but "Hammers" stands out above the rest.
10. My Morning Jacket - "Highly Suspicious"
This is one of those love-or-hate types of songs. Many of the die-hard fans of old-school MMJ found it to be somewhat of a slap in the face, but others, like myself, can't help but rock out every time we hear it. Seriously, this shit rips.
9. Dr. Dog - "The Rabbit, the Bat & the Reindeer"
One of my favorite new finds of the year was Dr. Dog's solid 2008 release Fate. I could have chosen just about any song off this album as my number nine, but "The Rabbit, the Bat & the Reindeer" has steadily became my favorite after numerous runs through the album.
8. Secret Machines - "The Walls Are Starting To Crack"
I only picked up my copy of the Secret Machines eponymous 2008 release after catching their live performances a few weeks ago (check out the two posts below this one). The solid effort from the newly rearranged band from NYC/Dallas features several songs we heard over their two-day Houston run, but the standout of the bunch, "The Walls Are Starting To Crack," was played both at Warehouse Live and Cactus Records. It retains the darkness that the Secret Machines have become known for, while adding pockets of brightness with the chorus. The electro-freakout that takes place in the middle just adds to the song's brilliance.
7. The Whigs - "Right Hand On My Heart"
The Whigs are definitely the loudest group to grace my list (though the Secret Machines are a close second), and their album Mission Control is chock-full of garage-tested tunes. "Right Hand On My Heart" proves that there is still quality rock-and-roll being made these days.
6. Department of Eagles - "In Ear Park"
The most beautiful music to come out of 2008 was featured on Department of Eagles' (Grizzly Bear side project) debut album In Ear Park. The acoustic arrangements and haunting vocals at the beginning of the title track eventually explode into a pompous piano and drum driven center section. Soon followed by an enchanting acoustic finale, "In Ear Park" sets the tone for the rest of the album.
5. Hot Chip - "Ready For The Floor"
I took me a while to get into Hot Chip, but I finally fell in love with them after the release of 2008's Made In The Dark. The album's first single, "Ready For The Floor," is one of those songs that doesn't seem to ever escape your head after hearing it for the first time in full. I still find myself singing it in the shower, even after several months of digesting the album.
4. Bon Iver - "Skinny Love"
Bon Iver's debut album For Emma, Forever Ago is the most simplistic work to come out of 2008 (technically 2007). "Skinny Love" is a highlight among many on the short album, but is definitely the premier song of the collection. Like many in my top ten, have fun getting it out of your head.
3. The Walkmen - "In the New Year"
One of my biggest musical regrets of 2008 is showing up just a little to late to see The Walkmen perform here in Houston. They were topping a bill that featured several popular local bands, so getting into the tiny venue was not an option that evening. I'd never really listened to them before that night, but soon after I picked up their album on iTunes, and spun it for the first time. When "In The New Year" came on the player, I immediately listened to it again. I loved it – and the rest of the album – and found myself incredibly irritated that I'd missed their show. The song spoke to me in a way that no other had in 2008, giving me hope that even though Hurricane Ike came and fucked up our flow for a while, all will be good in the new year.
2. Fleet Foxes - "White Winter Hymnal"
They were highly touted from the get-go, and for good reason. Fleet Foxes live up to their album's greatness in a live setting, which is the true test for any new hype-making band. Their Sun Giant EP was only a taste of what was to come on their eponymous debut, which made big waves in the blog communities. "White Winter Hymnal" is a short and simple tune that doesn't feature much more than a chorus, but it is perfectly crafted into a beautiful love song. Fleet Foxes, if you're reading this, please release another album in 2009. I would be quite the happy camper if that were to happen.
1. TV on the Radio - "Golden Age"
TV on the Radio have finally grown into their sound, and "Golden Age" is the perfect first single to show that fact off. They have built upon the formula that worked wonders for their first two albums, and added a much more approachable feel to their new album, Dear Science... as a whole. "DLZ" and "Red Dress" are also favorites of mine, but it was "Golden Age" that initially made me go out and purchase the album. They have the dexterity to make major waves in the music industry for several years to come, which excites me more than anyone could possibly know. If this is the type of material that they're putting out only a few years into their career, who knows what will come from NYC's finest in their assuredly interminable future.
Stay tuned for more of BOT's Year in Review!
