This year's Wakarusa artists have seriously impressed me. The festival is moving along with the times and adding many different genres of music as opposed to the jam-heavy line-ups of years past. A huge change this year is the addition of hip-hop with Arrested Development, Del Tha Funkee Homosapien and DVJ Mike Relm added to the already announced Blackalicious. George Porter Jr. is playing double duty this year guesting with Grateful Dead drummer Hart's band, as well as with his own P.B.S. project with Russell Batiste and Brian Stoltz. With State Radio already on the line-up, the addition of Pete Francis brings 2 out of 3 members of the recently reunited Dispatch to Wakarusa. Also of note are the several indie-rock acts that have made it to the line-up. Apollo Sunshine and Tilly and the Wall are two bands that I never expected to see at this year's event, but with the continued merging of the jam and indie-rock scenes I wasn't that surprised. Making return trips to this year's Wakarusa are The Everyone Orchestra (performing two late night sets with a revolving cast of musicians from the festival), EOTO, Donna The Buffalo, Delta Nove, Pangea and Robert Bradley's Blackwater Surprise.
