moe. / Tea Leaf Green @ The Meridian
Submitted by eggs on Tue, 04/01/2008 - 02:24.Houston's Meridian played host to veteran jamband moe. and tour support Tea Leaf Green on Sunday, March 30. It had been since last year's SxSW that we had a chance to see moe., so Cereal and I were truly looking forward to the event. Add to that the fact that San Francisco's Tea Leaf Green have made a huge name for themselves in the jamband scene, and I had yet to see them, and it's easy to see why the Meridian was the place for us to be that night.
Check out some more words and a whole lot of great pictures
The show started off great with the smooth melodies and tight jams of Tea Leaf Green. This is a band that needs a longer time to show off their talents. They focused mainly on their songs featuring more vocals than extended instrumentals. I will have to check out a longer set preferably in an outdoor setting.
moe. was up to the same old tricks by offering up only 16 total songs in their 3-plus hour set. To get a better feeling for how huge that song-to-time ratio is, Jack Johnson (and a bunch of other pop bands) usually plays through 30-or-so songs in about 1 hour and 45 minutes (or less).
Show opener "Plane Crash" has always been one of my favorites. Standard moe. numbers "Akimbo" and "Kyle's Song" were spotted throughout the first half while second set opener and closer "Buster" was jam packed with fan favorites "Okayalright", "Wormwood" and "Spine of a Dog". Many songs off their latest album Sticks and Stones, like "Zed Naught Z", "Deep This Time" and "Raise a Glass", were also featured throughout the 2-set show. We were also very lucky to celebrate guitarist Chuck Garvey's 39th birthday with party hats, cake and presents!
