Lil Wayne @ Voodoo Experience 2008

This year's Voodoo Experience featured many intriguing bands and artists, but there was one that stood out above the rest. New Orleans native Lil Wayne, who is widely regarded as one of the best rappers working today, came back to his hometown to draw one of the largest crowds of the weekend. BOT friend Bacon even drove all the way from Houston basically for this one show. We asked him to share some words about the experience – check out what he had to say after the jump.

When I heard that the "Best Rapper Alive" would be returning to the 504 for the Voodoo Experience, I have to admit that I had no idea what to expect going into his set. Would Lil Wayne be sippin' on that sizzurp and put on a horrible shitstorm of a show? Would it amount to a mediocre Hot Boys reunion with a ton of rappers onstage, sloppily finishing each others' lines? The one thing I probably least expected from Weezy was a professional, well-rehearsed performance. But that's what we got...and it was amazing.
Weezy's way-too-early set began with some pretty awful selections from a DJ — Queen and Tom Petty? Seriously?!? Thankfully, Wayne soon made his entrance and stood surveying the crowd with a big blinged-out grin on his face. He played the entire show with a DJ plus a really tight live band consisting of guitar, bass, drums and keys. As soon as he started spittin', all my fears of a mediocre show vanished. There are plenty of rappers who can kill it on wax, but only a select few have the ability to take it to the next level live. Weezy belongs in the latter group. His second song, the epic Wayne/Jay-Z collaboration "Mr. Carter," was as good live as it is on Tha Carter III. Not only did he hit every one of his lines, he hit nearly every one of Jay-Z's as well. Weezy spoke to the crowd after the song, saying he just wanted us to know three things:
"Number One. I believe in God.
"Number Two. I ain't shit without you, so enjoy what you created.
"Number Three. I am registered to vote – are you?"
You gotta love this guy. Next, Weezy launched into two songs that tidily summed up his entire philosophy: "Money on My Mind" and "Got Money," the second of which featured Mack Main. "Get money, fuck bitches." Indeed.
Mack stuck around for the next song as well, Weezy's dirty (and fantastic) ode to oral delights, "Lollipop." "Comfortable" and "Ms. Officer" soon followed; "Ms. Officer" was dedicated to "all the police officers out there today...especially the feeemale ones." The best thing about Weezy is that he does everything with such conviction, both when rapping and singing, that you can't help but believe him. Next, he picked up a shiny green guitar and did his best to imitate the blues, playing a few piss-poor riffs and singing about how much he loves orally pleasuring women. This, of course, transitioned into "Prostitute 2," a song about how his lady's scandalous past doesn't matter to him.
Wayne transitioned from the "Bitches and Hos" part of his set into the "I'm Lil Wayne" portion, with "Misunderstood," "I'm Me" and "Phone Home," all of which destroyed. So what if Weezy's setlist can be summed up as Money -> Bitches -> I'm Lil Wayne? The man writes great lyrics, has an incredible flow, and is respected enough to get the best producers and rappers on his tracks. He's also the hardest working rapper out there, a 26-year-old who has been rapping professionally since junior high and has already released eleven official albums (if you include his work with the Hot Boys) and an untold number of mixtapes. Plus he's writing a column for freaking ESPN.com!
Weezy closed out his triumphant return to NOLA with "A Milli," which featured Mack Main and some crazy kid dancing on stage. As his set had run way past schedule, his microphone was cut off at the end of the song. After a minute or so of attempting to shout out his thanks with no mic, Whitney Houston's "I Will Always Love You" came on...and Wayne lip synched to it damn near perfectly. Perhaps this could have been pre-planned, considering how well-rehearsed (and amazingly professional) the rest of the show was, but at any rate, it was awesome. Weezy F forever. Best Rapper Alive.
