50th annual Grammy nominees announced; list includes Wilco, Flight of the Conchords, and...Alan Alda?
This year's Grammy nominees were announced today, and if you're like me, you were waiting with bated breath. Or not. But although the ever-cringeworthy list is always a sure-fire way to anger this bowl of cereal, there are usually a few artists buried in the various categories who don't make me run for my earplugs. Read on for more on some of this year's Grammy-nominated, Cereal-approved artists, plus a video goodie.
2007 Grammy-Nominated, Cereal-Approved Artists
Feist
Noms: best new artist, best female pop vocal performance (for '1234'), best pop vocal album (The Reminder), best short form music video ('1234').
Why Cereal approves: Anybody associated with Broken Social Scene is all right with me. Plus I really want to re-create the spiral thingy from the '1234' video.
Justice
Noms: best dance recording (for the appropriately titled 'D.A.N.C.E.'), best electronic/dance album (for †), best short form music video ('D.A.N.C.E.').
Why Cereal approves: Though 'D.A.N.C.E.' isn't my favorite track from †, it's easy on the ears (assuming you don't find children's choirs creepy) and definitely danceable. I love the album as a whole...plus I just really like saying their name (that's zhoos-teece).
The White Stripes
Noms: best rock performance by a duo or group with vocals (for 'Icky Thump'), best alternative music album (Icky Thump), best rock song (for--you'll never guess--'Icky Thump').
Why Cereal approves: I've been resisting it for years, I tell you, years. But Eggs kept playing Icky Thump, and at some point I gave in. They call me Cereal, and I am a fan of The White Stripes.
Wilco
Noms: best rock album (Sky Blue Sky).
Why Cereal approves: Because Wilco kicks ass, and Sky Blue Sky kicks ass. VW has managed to make me almost look forward to their commercials.
Mika
Noms: best dance recording (for 'Love Today').
Why Cereal approves: He wears purple pants onstage and sings about the beauty of big girls. I don't think I need any other reasons.
Beastie Boys
Noms: best pop instrumental performance (for 'Off the Grid'), best pop instrumental album (The Mix Up).
Why Cereal approves: I hated the Beastie Boys prior to The Mix Up. I'm still not a fan of their previous albums, but I love this one.
Arcade Fire
Noms: best alternative music album (Neon Bible).
Why Cereal approves: Win Butler is my hero.
Stephen Marley:
Noms: best reggae album (Mind Control).
Why Cereal approves: It's really, really good. He sounds like Bob. Go listen to it. Seriously.
LCD Soundsystem
Noms: best electronic/dance album (Sound of Silver).
Why Cereal approves: Because I…well, because I dig this album.
Brave Combo
Noms: best polka album (Polka’s Revenge)
Why Cereal approves: Because just seeing their name reminds me of Denton, Fry St, UNT, and TAMS. And that’s reason enough for me.
Ozomatli…well,sort of.
Noms: best engineered album, non-classical (Don’t Mess with the Dragon).
Why Cereal approves: This was an engineers’ award, and they certainly did do a great job with this album. I wish the band had been nominated in other categories, but I’ll take what I can get.
Mark Ronson
Noms: producer of the year (‘Rehab’, ‘Back to Black’, ‘You Know I’m No Good’ – Amy Winehouse; ‘Littlest Things’ – Lily Allen; Version– Mark Ronson).
Why Cereal approves: Say what you like about the troubled chanteuse, but I love Mark’s work with Amy Winehouse. Version is a good listen as well.
The Flaming Lips
Noms: best surround sound album (At War With the Mystics 5.1).
Why Cereal approves: The tote bag I got at one of their shows is fantastic, and so are they.
The Flight of the Conchords
Noms: best comedy album (The Distant Future).
Why Cereal approves: If you haven’t checked this duo out yet, you absolutely should. Either you’ll not get it, or you’ll think it’s ridiculously hilarious.
The ‘Huh?’ Award goes to:
Tia Carrere
Noms: best Hawaiian music album (Hawaiiana).
Huh?: When did Tia Carrere start making music? And has there always been a category for ‘best Hawaiian music album’?
Cereal’s Favorite Category:
Best Spoken Word
Why? Because the nominees are:
Barack Obama – The Audacity of Hope: Thoughts on Reclaiming the American Dream
Maya Angelou – Celebrations
Bill Clinton - Giving: How Each of Us Can Change the World
Jimmy Carter - Sunday Mornings in Plains: Bringing Peace to a Changing World
Alan Alda - Things I Overheard While Talking to Myself

And, as promised, I have a video treat. If you’ve never heard of the Flight of the Conchords, check out ‘Business Time’ below. It’s one of my very favorites.
Carpe ientaculum.

The mix up is a classic a la
The mix up is a classic a la paul's boutique. Stephen marley's album was good but then again, anything with the name marley is gonna be nominated. I am personally pulling for Burning Spear, sick album! Im sick of the same artist being nominated every year in the reggae category. My personal pick is: I-Wayne's Book of Life album.
Gyptian had a great year as well!
