State Radio @ Slowdown

State Radio may very well be one of our most covered bands here on BOT. We have had the opportunity to catch them at several festivals, and never miss an chance to see them when they are near. Needless to say, when I found out they were playing Slowdown in Omaha on Friday, October 16th, I was all over that shit! Well, sort of. Being a constant procrastinator, I forgot all about it until the Monday before, which relieved some of my excitement going into the weekend.

It seems that every time I hit up Slowdown, it tends to be a late arrival. Once again, I play the role of a procrastinator. Friday was no different, making our way to the venue as the opening act, Dovekins, were just finishing up their last song. The Denver outfit had an interesting sound, including banjo and accordion into the mix. My take on them wouldn’t be able to serve them justice, but the tune I did hear was enjoyable. With the interesting array of of instruments on stage, the Dovekins may have been a one of a kind show at the least.

Little time lapsed between the conclusion of the Dovekins and State Radio taking the stage. The show started off abruptly, as they quickly broke into “People to People” off of their debut album Us Against the Crown. From the looks of things, the venue was at about half capacity, but that didn’t stop the crowd from erupting into a non-stop frenzy. Shortly into the set, they began playing several tracks off of their latest effort, Let it Go. To be completely honest, it has been a little bit difficult for me to take a liking to the new album. I enjoy it; it just seems so much different from any of their previous work that I was slightly taken aback upon first listen. It just seems to have a much more mellow vibe to the album. One of the main reasons that I love State Radio so much, is their ability to take a slow paced vocal track, and morph it into a guitar heavy rock song halfway through, which is the main thing that isn’t as evident on Let It Go. As of now, I have only given it a handful of listens, and I like it more with each whirl. Perhaps I’m just in an adjustment period. The rest of the evening was filled with a variety of the groups work throughout their catalog.

The hour and a half set seemed to fly by quickly, as most good shows do. The beautiful thing about the night was that the crowd didn’t miss a beat the entire night, giving right back to State Radio what they were giving to us until the last note. Their catchy mixture of rock and reggae is easy to take a liking to. Chad Urmston's unique vocals blend perfectly with the music. Although it seemed that everyone could have handled another hour or so of the main act, everyone was in good spirits leaving the venue. State Radio never fails to impress me, which should be quite evident by the amount of attention they receive on BOT.
