South Austin Jug Band @ Last Concert Cafe

Friday, June 27 found Eggs and me at one of our favorite Houston venues, Last Concert Cafe. We walked through the restaurant and into the outdoor stage area to find the majority of the picnic tables arranged in two long lines. Rows of people neatly perched on the benches while hula hoopers took advantage of the empty space in the middle. But musical guests South Austin Jug Band were the main focus, and they adroitly fulfilled our expectations.

Extra Golden @ the Orange Show

On Saturday, July 14, the Orange Show invited guests to relax amid the monument's citrusy wackiness and soak up the benga indie rock stylings of Extra Golden. This performance was the latest in the Orange Show's excellent series spotlighting musical performers from an array of backgrounds.

Mates of State @ Warehouse Live

Kori Gardner and Jason Hammel, the adorably (sorry, couldn't help it) talented couple behind indiepop band Mates of State, charmed the audience at Warehouse Live on Thursday, June 12. Who was there? What'd they wear? Which songs were played? Get all the gossip (okay, a recap and videos) after the jump.

Mates of State with Headlights and Black Joe Lewis & the Honeybears at Warehouse Live

We're a little thrown that this show is taking place at a club/lounge, but it should be a great time. It's being presented by Houston Indie Concerts and Coffee Shop Criminals.

Extra Golden to Perform at the Orange Show on Saturday, June 14

The most unique venue in Houston, the Orange Show, will be presenting another live music event this Saturday, June 14. Kenyan-American tropical indie rock band Extra Golden will be adding their energetic blend of rock and benga music to the already surreal atmosphere that surrounds this folk art monument. The band even has the Obama stamp of approval: his office helped them obtain the visas necessary to make their American concert debut. Obama-sistible!

Ume, Lymbyc Systym and The Sour Notes @ The Mink/Backroom

On Saturday, May 24, I was ordered by the evil BOThead overlord Eggs (kidding (kinda)) to cover the Ume/Lymbyc Systym/The Sour Notes show at The Mink/Backroom in Houston. I had just settled in to enjoy a slothful holiday weekend, and was not exactly pleased at the prospect of braving the rabid humidity to take pictures and jot down notes in a poorly lit venue, but I went nonetheless - and I'm quite glad that I did.

Bang Camaro @ Fitzgerald's

Tuesday, May 20th brought two choices to the Houston Breakfast On Tour crew: either get some free Jack Daniels and music from Black Rebel Motorcycle Club at Warehouse Live, or hit up Fitz's for some 80's hair-metal from Bang Camaro. After a bad showing from BRMC at Voodoo last year, we decided to take up the second choice and see what Bang Camaro had to offer.

Spoonfed Tribe @ Last Concert Cafe

Saturday, May 17th brought Spoonfed Tribe to town on a night when Radiohead dominated Houston's live show-going market. We had a wedding to attend (and thankfully tickets to Radiohead's Dallas show) so a late night journey to Last Concert Cafe was our next best option. We had a long day, so my review is going to consist of this short sentence: Dallas' Spoonfed Tribe brought out their jammier side during a percussion-heavy set of tribal rhythms and psychedelic rock. We did take a bunch of pictures though...
