Galactic & Mike Dillon's Go-Go Jungle @ Warehouse Live
Submitted by eggs on Fri, 11/27/2009 - 16:17.
New Orleans funksters Galactic brought their live show back to Houston's Warehouse Live with vibraphone extraordinaire Mike Dillon and his Go-Go Jungle in tow. Galactic always brings a pretty great live offering, even after seeing them as many times as I have at festivals and tour stops over the past decade. They freshen things up every couple of years by adding and dispensing of different members including vocalists, MC's and horn players. Their current incarnation features the original five members – Stanton Moore on drums, Ben Ellmen on saxophone, Robert Mercurio on bass, Rich Vogel on organ and Jeff Raines on guitar – and additional support on trombone and vocals for this tour by former Rebirth Brass Band player Corey Henry. They rely heavily on the two horns to front the band, but the true funkiest moments come when the other four lock into a groove. After an intriguing opening set of his own, vibraphonist Mike Dillon stepped up with Galactic to lay down some serious licks. The matching of Moore and Dillon was almost too much talent in the percussion section to handle, but their skills gelled nicely. The set rapped up with a nice round of hip-hop, closing with the title track to their funk/rap fusion album, From The Corner To The Block. A quick instrumental encore closed out the night, giving us a good preview of what to expect on their new back-to-the-roots LP, Ya Ka May, that will be in stores on February 9, 2010.
I brought the camera along, so feel free to browse my shots after the jump.

Submitted by eggs on Fri, 01/09/2009 - 21:31.High on the heels of the latest big announcement, the 2009 edition of the annual Wakarusa Music & Camping Festival has announced its first round of artists set to perform at the four-day event. Topping the bill with "two big sets" a piece are newgrass stalwarts Yonder Mountain String Band and electro-rockers Sound Tribe Sector 9. Late night spots were rewarded to two Waka-veterans including funksters Galactic, whom switched out their late-night spot last year with the tardy Cake, and virtuoso rock guitarist Buckethead, whom always pulls in a rather large crowd. Many bands will be playing the recently relocated festival for the first time this year including classic hip-hop group Digable Planets, the Trey Spruance (Faith No More/Mr. Bungle) fronted Secret Chiefs 3 and legendary reggae rhythm duo Sly & Robbie. As always, many more jambands are confirmed for the June 4th-7th, northwest Arkansas event.

Voodoo left our bodies and our ears quite exhausted, so it was not until the Wednesday following the festival that we made it to another show. New Orleans funk masters Galactic came into town for the start of their "Brass Tracks" tour, which featured special guests Shamarr Allen and Corey Henry on trumpet and trombone, respectively. Also on the bill were Oakland-based hip-hop group Crown City Rockers, who held down the opening slot.

Wakarusa Music & Camping Festival 2008 - Thursday/Friday

Festival season is a time to enjoy the company of many like-minded people in an atmosphere free from the worries of every day life. It is a time to see performances from several bands, spanning several genres, that you normally wouldn't get a chance to see otherwise. Wakarusa Music & Camping Festival, located just outside of Lawrence, KS, took place this past weekend, and served as Breakfast On Tour's jumping point for the 2008 festival season. It featured many highs and lows, but it all culminated into another unique festival experience for the BOT crew consisting of Toast and Eggs.

As you can tell, I am extremely excited about the initial artist announcement for this year's festival. It should be fun to see who else is added over the next couple of months. This week my Video Omelette features some of the bands that I am most excited for on the 2008 line-up.
