Houston International Festival 2008 Lineup Released

One of the events I look forward to most in Houston every year is the International Festival. This year's iFest (the 37th edition) aims the spotlight on Africa, and it's scheduled to take place April 19-20 and April 25-27 in downtown Houston. Rather than focusing on one country this year (as is typically the case), diverse performances and activities are planned to highlight the "three journeys of Africans: original human migration out of Africa, the tragedy of forced migration out of Africa, and the cultural journey back to Africa and globalization." This year's performance schedule was released today and includes the likes of The Wailers, Trombone Shorty, and Bettye LaVette, as well as cultural events such as Ethiopian and Kenyan fashion shows.

Plump CD Release Party @ Dan Electro's Guitar Bar

Music filled the air Friday, January 26th in Houston. Our BOT crew was split, with Doughnut and Coffee checking out Sharon Jones & the Dap Kings at Walter's (review to come), and Cereal and I checking out local funk band Plump at Dan Electro's Guitar Bar. Now it has been a good couple years since my last visit to this small neighborhood music venue. Even after all that time though, nothing has seemed to have changed.

Pharoahe Monch, Plump, Sharon Jones & The Dap-Kings, The Greyboy Allstars

We BOTheads have been busy the past couple of days -- Thursday night saw Coffee, Doughnut, Eggs and myself (plus a couple of friends) at the Pharoahe Monch show (with support from Orgone) Scion hosted at Warehouse Live. Last night, Doughnut and Coffee took in Sharon Jones & the Dap-Kings at Walter's On Washington, while Eggs and I checked out the Plump CD release party at Dan Electro's Guitar Bar. Tonight, all four of us are heading to The Greyboy Allstars show at Warehouse Live -- we've got an interview lined up with the band, and we're planning on snapping some great pictures from backstage to share with all of you out there in readerland. This San Diego-based funk/jazz group hasn't played Texas in ten years, so we're all really looking forward to tonight's show. If you're planning on attending (and you should!), come say hi and get your picture taken for the site! Coffee and I will be doing the promo thing between sets.
