Walter's On Washington played host to Montreal-bred indie rock group Islands with support from MC AWOL One. We were there to sweat through the performances of both of these groups.

Uh Huh Her @ Walter's On Washington

Camila Grey and Leisha Hailey brought their new-ish musical project Uh Huh Her out to play at Walter's On Washington on Monday, May 5. Fortunately, not-so-friendly neighbors Ryland and Scott Peveto didn't feel the need to call the police with a noise complaint this particular evening.

Two Heinekens with State Radio

We went to Walter's On Washington in Houston on March 1st to check out State Radio. We thought that this Saturday night show would be jumping off a little later, so we didn't find ourselves at the venue until close to 11 pm. Our assumptions turned out to be wrong as we walked in to catch the last song of their second encore. Oh well, I guess we can't catch them all! What we did hear out of the former (I guess you could say current) voice of Dispatch, Chad Urmston, made me move State Radio up on my list of bands to see.

Rockin' Out with Sharon Jones and the Dap-Kings

Sharon Jones and the Dap-Kings hadn’t graced Houston in 4 years, yet they definitely made their mark on the 25th of January in Houston, Texas. The Doughnut and Coffee shuffled their way over to Walter’s on Washington that night, and were genuinely impressed. As they squeezed into the ramshackle dive of a venue, they were greeted with Jones’ vocals belting through. Before long, it was difficult not to step away from the bar, push in closer to the small stage, and capture a little more of Jones’ old-school rhymes and funky tunes.

MGMT and Yeasayer @ Walter's On Washington

This is a big time for bands that fall under the umbrella we like to call indie-rock. People are sick of the same old thing on the radio, or on that certain music television channel we all love to hate. More and more people are now searching out music that they can't find on the Billboard Top 200 (or top 2000 for that matter). One of the major reasons for this is the ever-growing popularity of the independent music scene. This growth is particularly evident in types of bands we are now seeing at all of your major music festivals. I am pretty sure that I can speak for Cereal, Doughnut and Coffee when I say this: I have been eating this damn indie-rock thing up. I can't get enough of it! I used to be excited when I heard that a band like Umphrey's McGee or Particle was going to be in the area. Not that I don't now, but in my new indie-rock-discovery-mode I wouldn't think twice about skipping them to go see The National or Yo La Tengo. Fortunately, I did not have to miss another band on Sunday, January 20th when Walter's On Washington played host to MGMT and Yeasayer, two of Brooklyn's finest new offerings to the indie music scene.
