Voodoo Experience 2009: Saturday In Review

If I'm ever not in New Orleans on or around Halloween, I better have some extremely good excuse. In a city where dressing up in extreme costumes is normal pretty much every day of the year, when Halloween hits, the city goes buck wild. Saturday of the 2009 Voodoo Experience was not only special because the stellar line-up, but also because it just happened to fall on All Hallows Eve. We awoke early, strapped on our costumes (zombie priest, zombie monk, zombie nun, Jesus...), and headed to City Park to catch sets from Dan Dyer, Mates Of State, Sam and Ruby, Mute Math, Rotary Downs, Gogol Bordello, Wolfmother, Drive By Truckers, Jane's Addiction, George Clinton & Parliament Funkadelic and KISS.

Dan Dyer ::: 1:50 pm ::: Voodoo Stage

We walked up to the Voodoo Stage upon first arriving and quickly realized that scheduled performer K'Naan (whom I was really looking forward to seeing!) was a no show. Some quick schedule changes found Austin singer-songwriter Dan Dyer replacing him, while his slot at the same time was filled by New Orleans duo Sam and Ruby. I have seen Dyer now four times, with each performance taking place at Voodoo – he's always invited back for good reason. His soulful melodies, and simple acoustic-based music is the perfect blend for a lazy Saturday afternoon, so I wasn't all too mad that K'Naan wasn't performing. I'd love to see Dyer at some other venue than Voodoo, but I always know that his set will be a good one to fall back on during my annual trip to New Orleans.

Sam and Ruby ::: 2:00 pm ::: WWOZ/Soco Stage

While the rest of the BOTheads headed over to catch Dan Dyer, I started my day out with the soothing melodies of Sam and Ruby. I fell in love with the duo when I realized that one of my favorite songs by Canadian folk group The Duhks, "Heaven's My Home," was a cover of these two. While Sam had a pleasant voice, Ruby's entrancing vocals elevated the sound to a rough but flawless harmony. What makes these two stand out is their lyrics (which seems only right since Sam and Ruby met at a writer's night), and the ability to make the audience feel what they're singing. Not every artist can make their emotions almost tangible, so be sure to see Sam and Ruby if you get the chance.

Mates Of State ::: 2:50 pm ::: Playstation/Billboard.com Stage

I always love me some Mates Of State. Usually the whole indie-pop thing isn't my favorite, but Kori Gardner and Jason Hammell seem to pull of the genre with ease. The husband/wife duo spend a majority of their performances sending each other cutesy looks as they made some seriously bouncy twee pop. While photographing the show, Hammell pointed towards my direction, and said "Look, Jesus is taking my picture!" – one of many stage shout-outs I received while dressed as the messiah. They performed a fun show that included all of their set standards like "Goods," "Re-Arrange Us" and "My Only Offer," but the real standout was a cover of Tom Waits' "Long Way Home" which Bacon happened to catch on video. It was another great performance by the cutest couple in pop music.

Mute Math ::: 3:50 pm ::: Voodoo Stage

I was a little skeptical going to see Mute Math on the Voodoo Stage Saturday afternoon. The New Orleans natives were a little bit too pop-rocky for me at times, but I was curious to see how that played out. The set started out fast paced and heavily filled with songs off of their eponymous debut album. Ripping through "Chaos" and "Stare At The Sun," Mute Mathc turned out to be one of the biggest surprises of my Voodoo weekend. My main concern was that Paul Meany's vocals would come out sounding like garbage, but what we ended up with was a crisp sounding show that highlighted this bands true instrumental talent. Within their hour long set, Mute Math managed to draw a good sized crowd, ending their performance by tossing their shit to the stage floor after an intense percussion and key display. To keep it short, Mute Math was the shit!

Rotary Downs ::: 4:45 ::: Bingo! Parlor

Indie rock has never been truly represented at Voodoo, with the exception of a yearly showcase by local collective Rotary Downs. I first caught the group at last year's Voodoo, and really enjoyed their whole set, so despite having to miss the latter part of Gogol Bordello, I headed towards the Bingo! Parlor to see them again. They were just as good as I remembered, if not a bit more road-weary and loose. Adding a NOLA flair with occasional horns, the group easily entertained the crowd with their energetic brand of indie. It was a nice change of pace from every other act I saw that day (except maybe Mates of State), so I stuck it out to the very end. Hopefully they come up to Houston in the near future, because I'd assuredly be in attendance.

Gogol Bordello ::: 4:50 pm ::: Playstation/Billboard.com Stage

Gogol Bordello took the Playstation stage after Mates of State, and, due to their numbers and nationalities, were a big contrast from the 2-person indie duo. The band lived up to their reputation as pioneers in the gypsy-punk genre. The gypsy tag is believable; by the looks of it, Gogol Bordello was formed via a Eugene Hutz-led caravan traveling all over the world picking up random talented musicians. Hutz’s effervescent personality inspired at least a few members of the New Orleans Bingo Parlor to try and join his crew: several of their freaky stilt-dancers were sprinkled throughout the crowd and somehow danced harder than those on solid ground. Thankfully I didn’t see any of them attempt any face-threatening high kicks, as I did later in the weekend when Eggs was a near-casualty. A few of the unique elements of the band were costume-changing backup singers that doubled as percussionists and a super-random rapper. Hutz and co. worked the crowd like the pros they are, and by the end of their set had put a large portion of the crowd into the biggest frenzy I had witnessed since Justice: with unconstrained enthusiasm manifested via jumping, dancing, and near-moshing.

Big Sam's Funky Nation ::: 5:00 pm ::: WWOZ/Soco Stage

After checking out Gorgol Bordello's intense set, we headed over to the Soco/WWOZ stage to see Big Sam's Funky Nation. I had no idea what to expect going into this show. Walking up to a cover of The Black Crowes' "Hard To Handle" was a plus, but ended up being about the only gem of the set. Only catching about the last 20 minutes or so, there wasn't much to gauge these guys on. They sounded very generic, and were kind of washed out by all of the brass music in the city over the weekend. In a different setting, I could have had a good time with these guys, but in the swamp ass conditions, and with Halloween night's lineup about to begin, it became an early departure from the set for me.

Wolfmother ::: 6:20 pm ::: Voodoo Stage

Set to hit up the Voodoo Stage was the Australian foursome, Wolfmother. I was super stoked to see them as I have enjoyed their studio work in the past. They were basically my Mars Volta of the 2009 Voodoo and proceeded to put out a sick ass set. As the evening continued, I became more and more perved, but I can defiantly tell you that they played their hit, "Woman" early into their set. Many folks have compared them to Led Zeppelin. I fail to see the resemblance besides the fact that they are a killer rock band with screaming vocals. It was the perfect precursor to a solid night.

Drive By Truckers ::: 6:30 pm ::: WWOZ/Soco Stage

Oh sweet baby Jesus, I love me some Drive-by Truckers. Sadly, I have only seen the band on one other occasion, at Voodoo in 2006. They were quite different then: Jason Isbell was still a member, and I’m happy to say that, though they might miss his songwriting contributions and uber-country vocals, they are a better live band with John Neff in a more prominent role and Jay Rodriguez killing it on keys. In honor of the night’s headliner and the holiday, all of the members came out donning KISS makeup, then proceeded to open with a well-played cover of their “Strutter.” The next highlight for me was the one-two punch from Southern Rock Opera, “Road Cases” and “Shut Up and Get on the Plane.” Cooley shone on “One of these Days,” which followed shortly. “Sinkhole” was next, and was the perfect evil song to hear on Halloween. The three tunes that closed out the show put the rest of the set (and most other bands playing at Voodoo) to shame, “Let There Be Rock,” “Zip City,” and “People Who Died.” These later tunes featured the band passing around a bottle of Jack; personifying the lifestyle of the hard-partying country boy that is so often the protagonist of their songs.

Jane's Addiction ::: 7:35 pm ::: Playstation/Billboard.com Stage

So you now it's an awesome festival lineup when you have Jane's Addiction playing an early evening set, which just happened to be the case this night. Coming out dawning a overly tight spandex suit with a flashy cape was flamboyant front man Perry Farrell – good thing they've made some wonderful music. Opening with "Up The Beach," off their successful album Nothings Shocking, they quickly broke into "Mountain Song" to pump the crowd up a bit. Staying for a few songs, Jane's was rocking the stage in anticipation for the KISS show to follow. We then ventured over to check out George Clinton and the Parliament Funkadelic. I was fairly excited to see these guys, but the show seemed a little too drawn out and our trip ended up being a short one, allowing us to catch the end of Jane's set. I haven't seen Jane's previously, but they put on a hell of a show in New Orleans. Unfortunately, while researching the set-list for that night, I found out they play a similar, if not exact replica of their set each night. That may take a little bit of respect away from them that I once had, but it was still an excellent time.

George Clinton & Parliament Funkadelic ::: 8:15 pm ::: WWOZ/Soco Stage

I caught a good chunk of George Clinton & Parliament Funkadelic before heading over to the cheesed-out spectacle that was KISS. As always, the masters of funk didn’t disappoint. Unfortunately, the stage did. For some reason, the front-end loaders didn’t dump any sand on the muddy mess of the Soco stage (though they deposited load after load in front of the beer tents and merch tables). At night, this meant you couldn’t predict whether your next step would be on solid ground or ankle deep in foul Lousiana mud. After a few dirty missteps, I found my way to a dry patch of earth and prepared for funky liftoff. The band killed it, playing a set that included stellar versions of “We Want The funk,” “Up For The Down Stroke,” “Maggot Brain” and “Flashlight,” among other favorites. At one point, George had the crowd chanting “Poo Poo” in honor of Gene “Poo Poo Man” Anderson. It also served as an unfortunate description of our dance floor.

KISS ::: 9:00 pm ::: Voodoo Stage

I was extremely fortunate to know the right people leading into Voodoo, as I was able to photograph the weekend's headlining act KISS with only about fifteen other photographers out of the hundred or more that were trolling the grounds that weekend. It was a definite experience, especially dressed as Jesus. There was something seriously sacrilegious about the whole situation, but I had a blast with it.

KISS can still seriously rock it. Cheesy as they might be, the hits have survived the test of time, and to this day are still streamed heavily on rock stations the world over. The four rockers from Detroit – original members Gene Simmons and Paul Stanley flanked by newer touring additions Eric Singer and Tommy Thayer – screamed their way through a pyrotechnic extravaganza that included heavy doses of make-up, flying, blood, chrome and leather. Simmons made sure to show off his ridiculously long tongue to the costumed crowd at least 200 times during their hour-and-a-half set. I was expecting many more fans to be all KISS'd out, especially because of Halloween, but nevertheless everyone was still fully into the moment. Toast and I happily swigged from a bottle of Jack, as we watched the mania from afar – fist-pumping to "Rock And Roll All Night" and "Detroit Rock City" with the rest of the crowd. Overall, the whole KISS experience was much better than I thought it would be, even good enough to keep me with them rather than venturing over to the always-entertaining Parliament Funkadelic.

After the show precluded, a massive fireworks celebration ensued, which Toast and I witnessed being set up upon our arrival earlier in the day. I can't help it, but I turn into a giddy little school boy with a healthy round of fireworks. Toast and I were all smiles.

I really, really enjoyed this. The hum or w orks brilliantly, and the animation is much better than I had imagined. The way you have “blended” (hehe) it all together makes this look like a solid, whole product, as good as any Pixar sh ort. Probably better. But then again: That’s my opinion.
