Free Press Summer Fest

Another year of Houston’s biggest party, Free Press Summer Fest, has come and gone, leaving a trail of hangovers throughout the town. I’m finally starting to shape up from what was one of the best musical weekends of my life. Living much closer to the festival this year than ever before (three blocks away from the gate), we had the opportunity to catch pretty much the full weekend of music from the opening notes of the Sideshow Tramps on Saturday morning until Pretty Lights shut things down with a firework display that matched the intensity of his set on Sunday night.

Read about the weekend and check out a bunch of photos after the jump

Free Press Summer Fest 2012

Mar 5, 2012 by

The moment we’ve all been waiting for has finally arrived! The fine folks behind Houston’s annual music soirée, Free Press Summer Fest, have finally dropped the full line-up, and boy is it a doozy. Leading this year’s list of bands are bluegrass roots rockers The Avett Brothers, famed rapper and dope smoker Snoop Dogg, Texas country legend and equally famous dope smoker Willie Nelson, DJ extraordinaire Afrojack, bass heavy funksters Primus and a return from 2010 headliner The Flaming Lips who will be performing Dark Side Of The Moon in its entirety. I’m pretty sure no-one saw such a strong list of entertainers heading to Eleanor Tinsley Park come June, but Omar, Jagi and all the other fine folks that work for both Free Press Houston and Pegstar have truly outdone themselves for their fourth year of the festival. Also playing the multiple stages over the course of June 2nd and 3rd are The Descendents, Major Lazer, Young The Giant, Portugal. The Man, Morris Day & The (mutha fuckin’) Time, Best Coast, Two Door Cinema Club, Turquoise Jeep, Clap Your Hands Say Yeah, Robert Ellis and a whole heaping helping of more great bands.

Check out the full kick-ass line-up after the jump!

Free Press Summer Fest 2010 | Sunday In Photos

Free Press Summerfest 2010: Sunday, June 6
The 2nd annual Free Press Summerfest has come and gone, leaving a fulfilled feeling throughout our fair city of Houston. As an avid festival attendee, who has traveled the globe in search of different musical experiences, it was a very nice change of pace to have such a great event right in my back yard. Despite some intense heat, and even more intense rain and mud, I still managed to have one of the best weekends I’ve had in some time. The Flaming Lips were the prize performers of the weekend, but the festival also included standout showings from national acts like Lucero, Stars, Ra Ra Riot, Mix Master Mike and Medeski, Martin & Wood as well as local fair from Buxton, listen!listen!, Eastern Sea, B L A C K I E, Grandfather Child and Elaine Greer among many others.

While I was busy running around taking pictures for the Houston Press, I still managed to also take quite a few for myself over the course of the two day festy. Check out my shots from the Sunday, June 6th after the jump!

The Video Omelette: Dec 31, 2007

Dec 31, 2007 by

Here is a special New Year’s edition of the Video Omelette. It is the final VO of the year, so I decided to bring out some fireworks (and bucket drummers?). New Years Eve is always good times with friends and family. It is also a great time to check out some of your favorite bands. New Years shows are notorious for being long, fun and full of surprises when the new year hits. Here are some of my favorite bands pulling out all the stops for their own New Year’s Eve celebration.

Grateful Dead – New Year’s 1985/1986

The Grateful Dead always happened to add performance art to their performances. This time around they decided to bring out Bill Graham as ‘Mr New Years’ on top of a huge cake featuring massive cartoon style heads that Ken Kesey hilariously describes in his commentary. This is a pretty fun video!
